Dental Assistant Schools

Dental assistant school provides training for individuals interesting in becoming dental assistants, or professionals who provide support at a dental office. The duties of dental assistants vary, but they include taking X-rays, assisting the dentist during procedures, recording patient histories, sterilizing instruments, contacting equipment suppliers, communicating with patients, and maintaining the office. Attending dental assistant school is not always a prerequisite to being hired as a dental assistant; however, it does make an individual more attractive to employers.

Dental assistant school offers training in classrooms and laboratories, and gives students hands-on experience at dental offices and clinics. Individuals usually complete the program in nine to twelve months, after which they receive a diploma or certificate. Individuals who attend two-year programs at colleges receive an associate degree. Accelerated training is also an option at some schools, as are part-time programs and distance learning. After attending dental assistant school, graduates can become certified by passing the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam.
